Jacob W. “Born a boy, Raised a Girl” 3/13/10

After watching the short episode of “Born a boy, Raised a girl” you start to feel for the Reimer family. From the very beginning you can tell, after the freak accident, that Janet Reimer had a very hard time making the decision to raise her son as a girl. But it seemed very easy for Dr. Money to make the decision. For the Reimer family it was almost the answer to their prayers, or so it seemed, and for the doctor it was a dream come true. He believed that nature vs. nurture was the true answer to our sexual identity.

From the very beginning of his experiment he thought that is was going to work, but as time progressed Bruce, now known as Brenda, was starting to show masculine attributes; playing with boy toys, fighting with boys, etc… These features were showing up even before Dr. Money’s book ‘Man & Boy, Women & Girl’ was ever published. In his book he said that this experiment was a success. Mean while back in Winnipeg, Canada the Reimer family was having a hard time with their son.

Dr. Money even went to extreme measures to make Brenda believe he was really a she. So far to make both twins, Brain and Brenda, take their clothes off and take pictures to show they were different. That Brenda was truly a she. But for Brenda he knew better, he knew something was wrong. One last attempt on trying to convince Brenda that he was a girl, and to have a operation to make it final, Dr. Money had him sit down with a transsexual (male to female), to better understand, to persuade Brenda to go through with the operation. But once again it was a failure.

Finally Brenda’s parents told both him and his twin brother the truth, and when this happened the twins grew apart. For when Brenda was told, she changed his name to David. Many years down the road Dr. Money still continued to say that his experiment was still a success. Shortly after this Brain Reimer was found dead in bed. His death was either ruled accidental overdose, or suicide. (Still don’t know) David, married now to Jane Reimer, began to grow apart from her and his adopted kids (Jane’s biological kids). At the age of 38 David Reimer left his parents house one last time, with a gun.

As for Dr. Money, he was blamed for his death. For at a young age to put David through such horrific setting, and mental break downs, it was his fault that David killed himself. He never took any responsibility for what he had done to the Reimer family.

Jacob W. 4 Rules of Sex & Attraction Feb. 21st!

From ‘Men’s Health’ four of the ‘New Rules of Sex and Attraction’ that best cought my attention were;

#1) ‘She wants to experiment in bed’ (and out), because they did do the research and interviewed 104 people to find more information. Half (52 people) were asked to rate how normal it was for men to engage in the 33 different sexual behaviors, while the other half rated the same 33 sexual behavior practices for women. In turn it supported their study on how women seem to want to get the action going in and out of their bedrooms. While for men, if we try new stuff we are either frowned upon or labeled ‘gay’ (on when we want to try new sexual behaviors). Believe me, there is nothing wrong with a man wanting to try new techniques with whom we want (male and/or female).

#2) ‘Facebook Sex’, because it is so true. Many people I know, and my self, have met my former partners through friends (or friends of friends). I believe they have done some research on this, like James Fowler (Co-author of Connected: The Surprising Power of Our Social Networks), said, “2 out of 3 married couples met their partner through friends, or friends of friends.” Facebook / Myspace or another networking device comes in hand when looking or on the prowl for your future partner.

#3) ‘Hyenas on the Prowl for Hot Sex!’ I picked this one as well, because this is a two way street, not only do women get pushed into doing sothing they don’t want to, but men as well. As well for the 1st rule i picked, this one was also studied on. Almost 500 undergrads were studied, 39% of men have been pressured into a sexual act ranging from kissing to having intercourse, lower then the 48% of women, but still this proves it is a two way street for both men and women.

#4) ‘The Psychology of a Booty Call!’ Now Here is one study i make like to look into myself. Not only men, but women as well are afraid of a rel relationship. A booty call my just be the answer for this issue. I picked this one, because not only did one school do a study but two schools (New Mexico State University, and University of Texas at Austin), both did the study of a two part poll on undergrads on a several different topics.

Sexuality Theories Ch. 2 (Feb 7th)

After reading Ch.2 and doing some of my own looking into some of the theories. I would follow two of the theories that are listed in the text. [1) Biological Theory & 2)Sociological Theory]

1)Biological Theory:

Like many people (of homosexuality and heterosexuality) say, “I was born this way” tones of apposing sides try to argue their claim. There have been may research papers/studies done on this theory. I have found/believe that this is true. One of the many websites I found list several titles that you can find information regarding sexual orientation based on Biological Theory. ( http://www.narth.com/docs/bornway/html ) As I was browsing for more information, I also came across some conflicting arguments against this theory studied by a man named Daryl J. Bem. ( http://www.leaderu.com/orgs/narth/bem.html ) He does bring up some good arguments, but as he goes to say:

*[that his developmental thesis “does not describe an inevitable, universal path to sexual orientation, but the modal path followed by most men and women,” and that there are “individual variations, alternative paths, and cultural influences on sexual orientation” (Bem, 1996, p. 322)] (information found in above website.)(Not my own words)

2)Sociological Theory:

The second theory i would follow is the Sociological Theory. Many people have studied and found that media (t.v., movies, books, magazines, etc…) influence on ones sexuality. But they also found that is goes back to a biological aspect. As I was finding more information, I came across a good argument:

*[As a response to the claim that homosexual activities are “unnatural” or “do not occur in nature,” many groups cite scientific studies that indicate homosexual practices in many species (such as apes, monkeys, or penguins).] ( Information found; http://www.conservapedia.com/Sexual_orientation ) (Not my own words)

This website has a few different looks for different points of view (i.e. birth, childhood, & religion). I do agree with the fact that media does play a role in our sexual nature/sexual orientation, but a small part.
